China Energy has been actively implementing ecological protection in the Yellow River basin, with progress made in the ecological protection and poverty alleviation work at the source of the Yellow River in Qumalai County, Qinghai Province. From November 1 to 5, thanks to the joint efforts of all parties, livestock were moved out of the 150,000-mu grassland in the core area of the Yellow River source region, banning grazing for the first time in history.

The grazing ban in the core area of the Yellow River source region involves 150,000 mu of grassland, 33 herding households and 2,665 heads of cattle and sheep in Maduo Township, Qumalai County. China Energy earmarked a special poverty alleviation fund to help herders establish animal husbandry cooperatives in different places through pasture circulation and resettle the cattle and sheep moved out of forbidden pastoral areas. Meanwhile, grazing ban compensation is distributed to herders, and registered poor households are selected to serve as ecological guardians and cooperative employees. It is estimated that the per capita annual income of herding households after relocation has exceeded 5,000 yuan, effectively conducive to ecological restoration, enhancement of animal husbandry efficiency and increase in herders’ income.

The grazing ban marks phased achievements in the protection of the source of the Yellow River. Next, on the basis of summarizing the experience of the successful ban on grazing in the first phase, the group will cooperate with the local government to continue to strengthen protection and management, striving to make greater contributions to the improvement of the ecological environment in the upper reaches of the Yellow River.
