At the recent award ceremony of the 10th China Environmental Award held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, two subsidiaries of China Energy Investment Corporation, Guohua Electric Power and Guodian Technology & Environment Group, received honorable mentions for the award. Consisting of “China Environmental Award” and “China Environmental Award Honorable Mention,” the China Environment Award is China’s highest social welfare honor in the field of eco-environmental protection. This year, only 23 organizations and individuals were awarded nationwide.

The award-winning Guohua Electric Power took the lead in putting forward the concept of “near-zero emission” that “the emission limit of atmospheric pollutants from coal-fired power generation could be lower than that of pollutants from natural gas power generation” as early as 2013. Through the “high-quality green power generation program” aimed at comprehensive renovation of in-service units and the “efficient and clean near-zero emission project” targeting newly-launched projects, the “near-zero emission” has been promoted across two main sectors simultaneously. From 2013 to 2017, Guohua Electric Power achieved reduction of soot emissions by 84 percent, sulfur dioxide emissions by 64 percent, nitrogen oxide emissions by 82 percent, and coal consumed for power generation by 10 grams per kilowatt-hour. In 2018, the company ranked first among the Top 100 Green Gold Enterprises in China.

Guodian Technology & Environment Group, another award winner, is committed to research and development of pollutant emission reduction technologies for coal-fired power plants. It has built a number of state-level R&D platforms including the National Key Laboratory for Clean and Efficient Coal-fired Power Generation and Pollution Control, undertaken 81 scientific research projects at or above the provincial and ministerial level as part of the National Science and Technology Support Program, the “863 Program,” the atmospheric project and the “clean coal” project, and received 34 scientific and technological awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level as well as 284 patents. Its independent technologies ensure a reduction of 90 million tons of pollutants and save 1.3 million tons of coal annually.
