On May 8, the 22MW/4MW maglev flywheel energy storage technology research and application project of the Lingwu branch of Ningxia Power Co., Ltd. under CHN Energy stood out of nearly 200 counterparts to be selected as a demonstration case for coal-fired power generation unit flexibility renovation.
The flywheel energy storage project
The maglev flywheel energy storage system consists of a total of 36 interconnected 630KV flywheels. It features prefabricated manhole installation and purely mechanical energy storage, with a mS-level response speed. It can charge and discharge more than 10 million times, with a charging and discharging efficiency above 90% and a capacity to complete charging or discharging within 15 minutes. The system can effectively improve the frequency regulation ability and flexibility of generation units. Construction of the project commenced on November 10, 2021, and the first single flywheel was successfully tested on August 3, 2022. So far, all of the 36 maglev flywheels have completed trial operations and officially put into operation.
