Recently, Laoshidan Coal Mine at CHN Energy’s Wuhai Energy achieved a significant technological breakthrough with the launch of China’s first 5G smart control terminal based on an electro-hydraulic controller. This terminal addresses the gap in connecting coal mining equipment directly to 5G networks, significantly boosting underground production efficiency and enhancing mine safety management. This milestone marks a solid step forward in Wuhai Energy's journey toward building a smart mine.

In the production control center at Laoshidan Coal Mine, a large screen displays real-time data on the underground work environment, shearer machine status, hydraulic support parameters, fault warnings, and remote monitoring footage. Above-ground operators can intervene in the production process through the control system on their computers, with a response time of only about 0.1 seconds for data transmission and control commands. This rapid data interaction is made possible by the new 5G smart control terminal.

The 5G smart control terminal, based on an electro-hydraulic controller, is the result of in-depth research on applying 5G edge computing control technology to fully mechanized mining. To meet underground 5G communication needs, a custom-designed 5G module was embedded in equipment such as hydraulic supports, shearers, scraper conveyors, transfer machines and belt control devices. This setup leverages 5G’s high speed, large capacity, low latency and high reliability to transmit data from external cameras, sensors and equipment status indicators to the surface dispatch center via the 5G network.

Additionally, high-performance edge computing equipment deployed on-site enables real-time analysis and precise decision-making for complex scenarios. For instance, in guiding tunneling, it ensures accurate directional control to improve operational efficiency. When personnel approach operating equipment, the system responds instantly, effectively preventing safety incidents.

Prior to implementing the 5G smart control terminal, underground production equipment and centralized control systems relied on wired data transmission, which was prone to line damage and short circuits during equipment movement. With the transition to 5G wireless transmission, data transfer is faster and more secure, improving production efficiency. The smart coal mining control system has also been upgraded with features like gas detection and fault warnings, further enhancing operational safety.
