China's first piggyback transport trial train for highway tanker trucks recently completed a successful run on the Ligang Railway in Dongying, Shandong Province.
The trial train, consisting of 38 STX-series piggyback railcars from CHN Energy, transported 6 highway fuel tankers and 64 ISO tank containers. It covered the 74-kilometer route between Dongying Port Station and Mingji Station.
Piggyback transport is a multimodal method enabling seamless road-rail transfer by carrying road vehicles directly on rail cars, eliminating the need for reloading cargo. This "trains carrying trucks" approach significantly reduces logistics costs and carbon emissions. The trial was jointly organized by China Energy Railway Equipment Co., Ltd., the Dongying Municipal Government and Ligang Railway.
As supporting equipment for China's second batch of national multimodal transport demonstration projects, the STX rail cars played a vital role. The partners leveraged their respective strengths in equipment resources, transport organization and management to develop this innovative tanker piggyback transport mode, specifically addressing cargo drayage needs at Dongying Port. This model provides a new solution for multimodal transport and promotes deeper integration between port railways and road freight.
