The second unit of Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Project, located in Zhangzhou city of southeast China’s Fujian province, started commercial operation on January 1 after 168 hours of full-power continuous operation test. With this milestone, Phase I of the Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Project, in which CHN Energy holds a 49 percent equity stake in, has been fully completed and put into operation.

CHN Energy has actively participated in the investment, construction and technological application of the project. The project represents a key step in the Group’s nuclear power layout and its efforts to promote clean and low-carbon energy development. As an important starting point for the large-scale deployment of China’s third-generation Hualong One nuclear power technology, the Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Project is planned to build six nuclear power units.

Units 1 and 2 of Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Project

Hualong One is a third-generation pressurized water reactor nuclear power technology independently developed and designed by China and is currently one of the third-generation nuclear technologies with the largest number of units in operation and under construction worldwide. It has reached internationally advanced levels in safety, economic efficiency and environmental performance. A single Hualong One unit can generate about 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 8.16 million tons per year, equivalent to cutting standard coal consumption by more than 3 million tons.

At present, Units 1 and 2 of the Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Project have both entered commercial operation, with Unit 1 having generated a cumulative 10.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. Units 3 and 4 are under civil construction and equipment installation, while preparatory work is underway for Units 5 and 6. Once the Zhangzhou nuclear power base is fully completed, it is expected to provide about 60 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, helping to optimize Fujian Province’s power mix and improve the regional balance between electricity supply and demand.
