The National Institute of Clean-and-Low-Carbon Energy (NICE) under CHN Energy, together with CHN Energy Yulin Chemical Industry, recently completed a new round of testing at the Yulin Coal Chemical and New Energy Coupling Demonstration Base. The 2 MW/10 MWh ultra-high-temperature carbon-based solid heat storage device independently developed by NICE increased its maximum heat storage operating temperature from 900°C to 1005°C.

In this test, the heat storage operating temperature was raised to above 1000°C while keeping the system structure unchanged. The heat storage density of the carbon-based storage device increased by 29 percent, while system costs are expected to be reduced by more than 20 percent.

The research team carried out systematic optimization and evaluation focusing on factors such as temperature uniformity of the heat storage materials, overheating control of heating wires and insulation structure design. During the experiment, the heat storage device achieved stable cyclic operation for more than 168 hours under conditions of 1000°C, verifying the feasibility of ultra-high-temperature operation of the carbon-based heat storage system.

In the next stage, the project team will continue to advance core technology development and reliability testing aimed at reducing costs, providing technical solutions for application scenarios including flexibility retrofits of coal-fired power units, clean heating in mining areas, and the coupling of coal chemical industries with new energy.
