The Chinese section of the Ganqmod-Gashuun Sukhait cross-border railway project between China and Mongolia successfully installed its first prefabricated T-beam on May 10. Thismarks the official start of bridge girder erection for the second cross-border railway between the two countries, nearly 70 years after the first railway link was established.

The railway is another major cross-border rail corridor between China and Mongolia following the Erenhot-Zamyn-Uud Railway built in 1956. The line exits China through the Ganqmod Port and connects with a station in Mongolia’s South Gobi Province via the Gashuun Sukhait Port. Technically, the project adopts a combined single-track design featuring both standard-gauge and broad-gauge railways, with a total of 760 prefabricated T-beams to be installed along the line. Invested in and constructed by CHN Energy, the railway is scheduled to be completed and opened to traffic in 2027. Once operational, it will connect China’s Ganquan Railway with Mongolia’s southbound railway corridor, with a designed annual freight capacity of up to 30 million tons, playing an important role in strengthening connectivity and bilateral economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

Located in the Gobi Desert, the project faces harsh natural conditions, including year-round strong winds above Force 7 and frequent sandstorms, which impose significant constraints on high-altitude lifting operations. According to the latest construction progress data, approximately 26 percent of the project’s major substructure works have been completed, with 268 prefabricated T-beams produced so far. Under the current construction schedule, all bridge girder installation work along the line is expected to be completed by October this year, with the overall project progressing steadily as planned.
