The Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering recently issued its 2026 Power Science and Technology Awards announcement. A project submitted by CHN Energy New Energy Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd., titled Key Technologies and Applications for Long-Term Stable Carbon Capture from Coal-Fired Flue Gas, won first prize in the 2026 Power Science and Technology Progress Award category.
The achievement represents a major scientific and technological innovation by CHN Energy in carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). Focusing on China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and the need to accelerate the low-carbon transition of coal-fired power, the project addresses common industry challenges through comprehensive technological research and development covering absorbent development, process optimization, equipment development and engineering demonstration. It has resulted in an integrated carbon capture technology system featuring large-scale capacity, low energy consumption and long-term stable operation, backed by independently owned intellectual property rights.
The technical team established the first multidimensional performance evaluation system for absorbents and developed a new generation of low-energy-consumption, long-life absorbents, along with multi-process online purification and amine recovery technologies, effectively reducing absorbent losses. The team also independently developed China's first integrated carbon capture process capable of long-term stable operation, achieving several technological breakthroughs. A comprehensive set of technical standards covering the entire process, from design and commissioning to operation, was also established. The technologies can be widely applied in thermal power generation, chemicals, steel, cement and other industries, providing important technical support for the large-scale commercialization and deployment of carbon capture technologies in China.
The China Power Science and Technology Award is widely recognized as an authoritative award in China's power industry. Approved by the National Office for Science and Technology Awards in 2001, it was among the first 26 awards established by non-governmental organizations following China's reform of its national science and technology awards system. The award was jointly established and is administered by the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering in collaboration with 13 energy and power organizations.
